I am Carly Kathleen Meredith, but I’ve been called “Kook” by my family members since the first crazy blonde curly hair finally popped out of my big bald baby head. I’ve always been the oddball and now the greensheep. I'm lucky enough to have a family that loves me for the eccentric individual that I have always been, and they continue to support my lifestyle to this day.I grew up begging my parents to buy me a new notebook anytime we went shopping so I could create a new story. It started with cartoons of my family members, and one superhero called SuperDog, created with my life long friend, Alyssa. It was when I hit my last years of high school that my voice in my artwork started to make a little more noise. I had a dear friend and fellow artist who started calling me “Gnarlz”, and well, it stuck. We both attended The University of Colorado at Boulder majoring in Studio Arts after graduating from Liberty High School in Colorado Springs. From freshman year until graduation from Boulder, I was known as Gnarlz, or Gnarlzy. The name has always fit my artwork and my will to be weird, and courage to own my differences and live them confidently. This is what I strive to achieve in my artwork.I started my art journey at a very young age, when my Aunt Kathleen Weeks and Uncle Richard Meredith introduced me to painting, drawing, poetry, and pottery. I spent all four years of high school glued to the art rooms and spending all of my free time in there. My ceramic artist for these years was JT Hinchman. JT taught me to talk to my artwork, and grow with it. "Just a skosh of love." I credit a lot of my life’s path to her and my aunt and uncle, who encouraged me to express myself in MY way, to be weird and love it, and to embrace that I can make anything I want to; that’s the beauty of art.The feelings that only seem possible to experience once, and even if only for a second, how it can change your life entirely. How do we expel that feeling without letting it go completely? The first time you listened to your favorite album. The first time you saw a piece of artwork that made you emotional. The first time you experienced true, raw love. I explore how to relate this into a moment of time you can hang on your wall and experience over and over again, while diving deeply into your memories and feelings. Just sit here, and experience mine with yours.I take inspiration from many different artists, musicians and moments in time. Many of my influences come from the works of Claude Monet, Egon Schiele, Georgia O’Keefe, Pablo Picasso, Ralph Steadman, Frida Kahlo, Ram Dass, Vincent Van Gogh, Isaac Brock, Jim Morrisson, Francis Bacon, Jeanne Quinn, Brooke Armstrong, Kaylee Frings, Matt Dickey, and Dylan Fudge, to name a few.

About My Art

I like to explore the inner depths of my mind and pull out things I would not otherwise recognize. Sometimes my works start out with a vision, but by the time I’ve finished, it has transformed into something completely different. I find the Flow State to be a crucial and integral cog in my art machine.

Surreal landscapes, the human figure, sex, intricate linework, warm, cold and raw feelings. How the world is making me feel. The energy I feel from others. The inspiration I feel from others. The horrors and absolute beauty of everything in this world. The way words can influence so much in your life, whether it be your favorite song or an old poem covered in dust.

About My Work

I’ve always been interested in exploring different mediums, and how they can work together in unusual ways. Textures, colors, and line work is what drives my paintings. The freedom of a pencil stroke is what guides my drawings. And the connection to the earth is what fuels my love for ceramics.

My main mediums for my paintings include acrylics, watercolors, colored pencils, sharpies, India ink, linseed oil and blending glazes, isopropyl alcohol, salt, and dirt. I like to paint on stretched or unstretched canvas, bristol board, wood, glass, or anything I find interesting. I use what I have around me, what’s been gifted to me by friends, fellow artists, and the earth.

My Poetry

“I see better in the fog.
When the day is empty and lost in the cold.
I see the lion and the fair weather.
The sleeping bee and the dog day.

No one can see forever but please remember me.
The trapeze artist under the moonlight,
On the hood of your car with
The elements of danger swinging in your face.

So if the pearly gates open and
Dear Lucifer is there to meet us, just know
The monkey and the marching hand
Already made it to the sand.

No one can live forever but please remember me.
When she held my hand for her life
And the light was that autumn shade of gray.
With the lion and the bee swinging in the tree.”

“I love you when the earth is round.
And when the wind is high.
The wind is high and we turn on
The love and the light.

Because the love is high
The land fits in with you and me
Under the sheeted sea with
A slight turn and a glance at me.”

“When can a person stand on it’s own
When does the unlucky soul realize
They’re alone forever.
Wander this life without a hand to hold.
Or someone to love.
How long do we do this.
Maybe the second season will show
Me the warmth of a soul.
The Next Season, not now.
And the way out of this season is inevitable.

‘Maybe I’ll I go and see Kathleen.’”

“There's a long road, no turning back.
'Why are you scowling?'
Because I'm frustrated with this life
I'm frustrated with humanity.

What makes you come to terms with reality?
Does it mean leaving reality for a little while?

If only everyone could open their minds
To realize what life
Is really about.

Come lay in the fields and discover the truth."
